The Descent of Inanna er en konsertforestilling av komponist, lydkunstner og musiker Melissa Miel og scenekunstner og regissør Claudia Lucacel, inspirert av den over 4000 år gamle sumeriske myten om Inannas nedstigning til underverdenen. Urpremieren markerer også utgivelsen av Melissa Miels debutalbum, The Descent of Inanna. Inanna — gudinnen for kjærlighet, fruktbarhet, makt og krig — stiger ned til underverdenen gjennom syv porter. Ved hver port blir noe tatt fra henne. Hva gjenstår når alt det kjente er tatt fra oss? Den eldgamle myten blir en poetisk ramme for et samtidige verk om tap, overgivelse, transformasjon og tilbakekomst. I sentrum står to søstre: Inanna og Ereshkigal, dronningen av underverdenen. Gjennom musikk, lydkunst, bevegelse og fortelling utfolder møtet deres seg i det resonante rommet i Sofienberg kirke. Musikken har vokst frem gjennom flere år med lydutforskning i Spro Gruve på Nesodden. Siden hun først møtte grotten i 2023, har Melissa Miel vendt tilbake gjennom ulike årstider for å utforske dens unike resonans gjennom klarinett, stemme, tromme og feltopptak. Grotten ble både et musikalsk laboratorium og et sted for dyp lytting, der lyd, stillhet og rom gradvis formet verket. Komposisjonene i The Descent of Inanna speiler Inannas ferd gjennom de syv portene — en gradvis nedstigning fra Det store ovenfor til Det store nedenfor, en reise mot transformasjon og tilbakekomst. Opptakene fra grotten, miksingen og masteringen er gjort av den anerkjente polske lydkunstneren og feltopptakeren Marcin Dymiter. After several years of listening, composing, recording and working with an ancient myth, we are ready to open the gates. The Descent of Inanna is a concert performance by composer, sound artist and musician Melissa Miel and performance artist and director Claudia Lucacel. The work is inspired by the more than 4,000-year-old Sumerian myth of Inanna’s descent into the underworld. The world premiere also marks the release of Melissa Miel’s debut album, The Descent of Inanna. Inanna—the goddess of love, fertility, power and war—descends into the underworld through seven gates. At each gate, something is taken from her. What remains when everything familiar has been stripped away? The ancient myth becomes a poetic framework for a contemporary work about loss, surrender, transformation and return. At its centre are two sisters: Inanna and Ereshkigal, Queen of the Underworld. Their encounter unfolds through music, sound art, movement and storytelling within the resonant space of Sofienberg Church. The music has emerged through several years of sonic exploration inside Spro Mine on Nesodden. Since first encountering the cave in 2023, Melissa Miel has returned throughout the changing seasons to explore its unique resonance through clarinet, voice, drum and field recordings. The cave became both a musical laboratory and a place of deep listening, where sound, silence and space gradually shaped the work. The compositions in The Descent of Inanna mirror Inanna’s passage through the seven gates—a gradual descent from the Great Above to the Great Below, and a journey towards transformation and return. The recordings from the cave, as well as the mixing and mastering, were created by acclaimed Polish sound artist and field recordist Marcin Dymiter. The album forms the sonic universe of the performance and brings the myth of Inanna to life.
